Revision videos on Binomial Expansions for A level mathematics students

These videos give a quick review of the key binomial expansion content on A level mathematics followed by a number of questions. The main contribution is to show how questions can be solved using simple techniques linked directly to the formulae for binomial expansions. Consequently they will be useful for students who are revising and trying to improve their problem solving skills. These videos use the general form of expansion as that is more flexible for whatever type of question may come up on an exam.

The 1st two videos spend a little time demonstrating the origin of the formulae, so students happy with this could go directly to video 3. Videos 3-5 summarise key formulae before tackling some typical questions. Use the left hand toolbar to access the other chapters and themes.

It is implicit that for many engineering topics, students have core competence in some mathematical topics such as polynomials, roots, complex numbers, exponentials, logarithms and Laplace.

This section contains the following topics. Under each topic there are hardcopy (pdf) notes, a video talk through of key derivations with example problems and also a tutorial sheet for users to test themselves.

  1. Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 1.
  2. Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 2.
  3. Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 3 .
  4. Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 4.
  5. Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 5.

Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 1

A rapid review of the definition of a binomial expansion followed with some illustrations of how and why the coefficients are what they are? Demonstrates that the coefficients have a prescribed pattern.

Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 2

Builds on the insights of video 1 to give precise definitions or formulae for the coefficients of a binomial expansion. Students are usually provided with these formulae in an exam, but familiarity is always helpful.

Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 3

After a very brief reminder of key formulae which will be used, this video presents 4 introductory type questions from A level papers and demonstrates a systematic solution methodology for them.

Revision of A level binomial expansions - questions and answers 5

After a very brief reminder of key formulae which will be used, this video presents 4 less typical questions from A level papers and demonstrates a systematic solution methodology for them. [Minor typo in part b of Q4, should ask for q/p.]
